There is an abundance of not-so-useful Zombies Fighters and their already unsuccessful predecessors. Mainly, it seems to copy previous successful titles but never lives up to the hype. Everything begins with a cliche and then spirals downward from there. In this particular case, Poj Arnon does not make it any better with this take of his.
Arnon makes a shift from his trio of ghostly movies, which include – Make Me Shudder, Shudder Me Mae Nak, and Make Me Shudder 3, – and shifts from ghoulish characters to zombies. While it may seem like an upgrade in terms of story and character development, it does not translate into a better experience from the viewer’s standpoint. For example, in his latest work, he has assembled beautiful, teenage boys and pitted them against a hundred ghouls in the confined area of a hospital. What ended up happening was the audience getting trapped in an endless cycle of misplaced jokes and pure illogical reasoning.
The funny point of the movie is the one short clip where a group of boys take it upon themselves to tackle the soldiers that have ‘quarantined’ the hospital with the intention of killing all citizens before they are bitten by zombies. In fairness to the story, there is a cutscene that follows which features the reason for the boys being in a typical run-down building, but as expected, it is impossible to understand.
The lead Lamdo is on the phone with his brother Audy from that group asking for some assistance. Along with his posse, including Cooper his third brother who has some cognitive issues, he embarks on the journey. After some searching, they end up finding the Parents, the reason why they ventured out in the first place, and attempt to exit the ward.
Zombie Fighter is almost comically bad at the age-old task of storytelling. The one thing the film does accomplish is that its plot appears to suffer from schizophrenia as its pulled in different directions from the cast. Focusing on one direction or character will always seem foolish. We have the goofy leader who aims to rescue them all, friend Auto who betrays them all to save himself and Gel the half-zombie lady who tries to save them from the horde.
The movie attempts a cast of over 15 characters, so its not surprising that it ends up being incoherent. It fails to display any attempt at logic, which only contributes to it being worse.
For Cooper, he will stroll alongside zombies taunting them with an intestine being flung towards his sibling, meanwhile, for the most part, he’s shrieking and scurrying away. Later, after one of their friends gets infected he’s ready to sink his teeth into one buddy but after the group rescues him, he starts attacking the people who saved, them right after they get into a secure room. It’s quite evident that Arnon is just aiming to keep the screams coming. This aspect, however, gets stale at an astonishingly rapid pace.
You’ll obtain scene after scene where the boys are desperately trying to flee the zombies, only to be ensnared by the gurneys and forced to do so once again. In the meantime, the zombies will do their utmost best to avoid biting the actors to keep the business intact.
Towards the mid mark, after having lost every trace of motivation and reasoning and witnessing two large groups tackle the premises, I attempt to appreciate the film for its over-the-top comedy, but I can’t grab a single chuckle.
I was unable to fathom the reason behind this movie until the very last moments – such as when the children scratch at an exit, hoping to escape. The sharp rays of sunlight pouring inside the exit during nighttime is a giveaway hint. Similarly, the scene where the hotel car is presented at the highway only for two zombies to land on the roof and turn it over later is very telling. Lastly, when an avatar from a video game emerges in reality alongside the Avengers team, it is the final line drawn.
