“Zookeeper” is a fantasy that blends reality and comedy, illustrating how Kevin James’, a zookeeper’s life takes a romantic turn, thanks to the animals from the zoo assisting him, which eventually gets him a partner, Rosario Dawson. Undoubtedly, they seem to give credible advice if he ends up with her! At the end of the day, it’s an entertaining buddy movie but filled with lots of talking animals and the best one is a gorilla!
Seeing the first animal open its mouth and speak in the movie was weird and gave me a sinking feeling. Talking animals is not a new concept, but live action still gives me creeps, because it’s just so weird. I meticulously tried to stay away from anything to do with the movie and expected a more grounded narrative on animal zookeeping, sprinkled with historical and psychological components.
What I received instead was an assortment of animals capable of perfect accents, spanning from Don Rickles as Frog, who lacks a first name, and Bernard the gorilla voiced by Nick Nolte, straight to Adam Sandler as Donald the monkey, Joe the lion played by Sylvester Stallone, and Janet the lioness portraying Cher.
Kevin James plays the socially awkward Griffin, a zookeeper who really loves his animals, and it turns out they love him back. He’s a sweet yet goofy guy who once dated the hot Stephanie (Leslie Bibb). The story goes that she dumped him because he didn’t make enough money. However, now he seems to be getting a position at his brother’s luxury car dealership and she is interested again. The problem is he’s extremely shy.
The animals group together to help him out, using strategies such as aggression from the lions, territory marking from the wolves, and throat puffing from the frog. Griffin is so gullible that he proceeds to mark his territory at his brother’s rehearsal dinner by urinating in a pot.
In the same location, openly and showing her passion for animals is his colleague, zookeeper Kate (Rosario Dawson). He would wonder that, wouldn’t he prefer the more basic Stephanie? The structure needs him to and that’s the issue. That’s rom com law: the guy has to lose to the women who gets top billing, but only after a series of romantic misadventures.
What we find especially funny within this movie is how the comedy is caricatured, not the romance. By swinging on some long cloth strips that fortuitously banned from the ceiling, Griffin completely hijacks his brother’s wedding; then, together with Bernie the Gorilla, he chases his brother around in some exciting chase scenes. It is also funny when they go out to dinner together at TGI Friday’s, which Bernie has long eyed from over the top of the zoo walls.
A great movie this is not and I daresay that, but a good summer flick it surely is. My best hunch is that the whole family can enjoy this together. It has these animals which give advice to humans on how to behave, which is a tad clever, but personally, I’m starting to get a tiny bit tired of cute cartoon animals. These particular inhabitants of the zoo thoroughly enjoy their life as 2D characters.
