The Shadow Man starts off with a woman named, Rachel, screaming while being bound strapped down to a hospital gurney. As a shadowy figure of a man in a fedora appears, he begins to remove what looks like an aborted or deformed fetus while Rachel staired agape. Then, Rachel wakes up to reveal Scott, her husband. The couple has issues of their own, with Scott having an affair and Rachel experiencing nightmares of the Hat Man, which she, quite simply, finds out through a Google search. William, a creepy dude who knows a little too much about the paranormal, was able to meet Rachel on her quest to prove she is not completely losing her sanity, but whether or not she is sane, is another question.

I’ll just come out and say it: The Hat Man’s appearance completely resembles that of Freddy Krueger’s shadow cut-out set piece. There is no other way to describe the ghouls, and that makes \The Shadow Man\ lose any semblance of a gripping and tense narrative, if such a shallow tale could even be considered a story. The Shadow Man is a Creepypasta phenom of a film, but fails in its noble attempt to turn out a pretty looking film.

As noted in the Q&A of 2015, Adam Tomlinson mentioned his “Hat Man” experience and its influence on him writing the script. This right here is proof that saying, “Based on the infamous shadow man legend…” on the back cover of The Shadow Man DVD isn’t the best idea out there. I bet it is much more entertaining to spin the tale, but I suppose that’s where the true reality lies after all. It also reminds me of campfire stories on Are You Afraid Of The Dark. When they attempt to use the cliché of “This is a true story” sticker gives this zero substance and is more cringe-worthy than anything else. It’s also interesting how there is zero backstory on the Hat Man other than a simple Google search leading to YouTube and William’s vague information about it. Why watch the documentary if I can do my own Google search? In this day and age, how can people not be left with these ideals after viewing the film?

The audience does not escape unscathed with the shallow characters being on display, either. As much as she wants to help this film, Sarah Jurgens as Rachel does not succeed. It is not completely her fault for the dreadful anticlimactic script, yet, taking on this role was her decision. Watching the “relationship” between Rachel and Scott, played by Nick Baillie, is quite unbearably cringeworthy. Scott Continually Attempts To Psychologically Finger Sarah By Suggesting Her Visions Are Because Of His Affair With Some Other Woman. She is not accepting his disbelief and ultimately his abuse as she exhibits her own unfaithfulness. Furthermore, Adam Tomlinson as William bears a face that suggests constipation, which is just painful to look at. His doe-eyed, overly greasy expression is not creepy. Instead, it is downright cheesy.

Lack of information related to The Hat Man or shadow people combined with the horrendous script and acting leaves the movie dead. There are not so many characters or plot twists to work with, which makes the predictably factor too simple here as well. Nonetheless, you can tell the filmmakers were trying to produce a movie that doesn’t appear low-budget, which is an achievement—though it does not elevate the final product from the bottom tier of the rating scale. There is a degree of anxiety, but it is not the result of the film’s atmosphere on screen; it’s the scene taking place in the viewer’s living room.
