The Eve is directed by Ritchie Steven Filippi and the screenplay is written by Evan Bass. Bass also portrays a role in the film. The Eve features two couples traveling to Martha’s Vineyard to celebrate New Year’s Eve.
However, the movie begins from a different setting at a different time altogether. One where There’s an unknown man sitting on a chair with a knife stabbed into his stomach and a young girl, who appears almost catatonic, standing next to him. The Auld Lang Syne score is accentuates the theme of New Year, further indulging the viewers. Indeed, the film is for those who require a new brand of horror on New Year’s Eve.
After some time, we are at a different location where we have Scott, Jenn, Harry, and Lacey. Evan and Althomson play Scott and Jenn, DiDomenico is cast as Lacey, and Wilson plays Harrison. Scott, Jenn, and Harrison are all familiar from college, Lacey is a new girlfriend of Harrison.
They intend to Mendoza Vineyards, which provides to allow the complete group to get to understand Lacey, while masking all their individual problems on the facade of mend the walls of their other relationships.
The group’s underlying problems run deep. Harrison feels resentful that Scott does not care about losing almost everything to a bad business deal, while Scott and Jenn used to date and Lacey suffers from intimacy issues due to her father’s abuse.
The Eve spends considerable time developing the characters and explaining what would make any one of them lose control while simultaneously treating them like a non-sentient being. Were an unknown assailant to strike and kill one of the group members, every single person present would have a reason to be painted the suspect in this case and it turns into a ‘who done it’ sort of thriller.
The reason I use “kind of” is that while the show does employ some efforts that aim at upper cutting your assumptions, it is in fact, very easy to guess. It’s hard for me to envision many people having difficulty in figuring out the murderer and their reasons for committing such an act.
This isn’t as tense as it could have been – and some people would argue that drawing on a bigger cast would have drastically improved that – and at times, pretty dull. The blame for that has to fall squarely on the shoulders of the writing which spends far too much time with characters that are just not that interesting. To make matters worse, a couple are wholly unlikable too. It’s not the fault of the actors as no one does a horrible job, it’s the script.
When you reach the end, it is tough to care about any of the cast that is still standing. You’ll instead want it to wrap up quickly so that you can finally switch it off.
While it isn’t a terrible movie, it is not a great one either. It does a good job with ‘New Year’s Eve’ though. Its one of those run of the mill murder mysteries where one questions why they are watching it in the first place. A good idea poorly executed.
