In 2009, The Asylum diverged from their formulaic approach and began creating original comedies (aside from any film for which they purchased distribution rights). A selection of these titles include Sexpot, 18-Year-Old Virgin, and 1 Cheerleader Camp, and their most recent attempt in comedic territory is The Coed And The Zombie Stoner. I am glad to say that it is their most creative and truly funny comedy of all.

The bad thing is usually the most straightforward. Professor Hagfish (Diane Chambers) is served positively in literally no capacity. She just whines and becomes an obstacle to everything, including character and plot development. The ending with her in it is also frustratingly vain, as it does nothing but worsen the positive aftereffect of the proper ending. Actually, if you ask me, there are a few other scenes and subplots that need to be trimmed as well. The entire segment about needing a boyfriend to avoid being dumped and subsequently losing a scholarship that sets the whole plot in motion is poorly constructed. And Bambi’s endgame (before the whole zombie business starts to happen) was never clearly defined. Also not required was PJ’s dumping of Chrissy at the first party. I don’t know why she couldn’t simply be single. She’s an old flame of his she means nothing throughout the film.

This may be a surprise, but the biggest asset of the movie is the two lead actors. Catherine Annette is excellent as the chemist sorority sister Chrissy who never stops talking, which usually consists of scattered science information. Annette successfully portrays the character who can only comprehend the world via science and is utterly deaf to social interactions. Grant O’Connell, as the stoner zombie boyfriend Rigo Fabien, does not speak much so most of his performance relies on the rest of his face and his limbs. To his benefit, he has quite a charming face that makes the audience understand everything he is trying to express, which is a lot, even when the only sound he makes is a grunt. Jamie Noel plays the mean wannabe bad girl Bambi. At first sight, she appears cartoonishly dumb, but as the rest of the plot unfolds (reader, flashback!) she gets more interesting as we catch up with her. Andrew Clements plays a character called Spike, who is a chronic stoner with some bizarre sex fetishes. His timing and delivery were quite on point and no matter the scene, he always knew how to crack me up.

Dora Pereli is the ditzy Bunndy, and Lena Young plays the sorority sister Bibi, the valley girl. Both of them seem to be having a fun time. Diane Chambers as old Professor Hagfish is quite good at being irritable, although the movie did not require her character at all (as stated previously). Dr. Avon is an advisor and mentor to Chrissy, and Louis Dezseran has just the right touch of irritation and pride to make his obnoxiousness reasonable.

While The Coed and the Zombie Stoner appears to be a stoner romantic comedy, Mullen has crafted a romance that is believable and comes with some adorable touches. I think his depiction of stoners relies on prejudices a bit, but he gives them some amazing hero moments so it evens things out in my opinion. Also, the zombies are still very fast, and most of their personalities are still with them, which leads to some very funny situations. When necessary, they are still very scary, and the make-up is well done.

Glenn Miller, the director, doesn’t lose the main joke of the show so even when a significant outbreak ends sup happening, it is still really funny. He also edited an amazing dating montage of our leads, which features them trying to learn how to dance, and reminded me of ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ but far better because lets be honest, that movie was complete garbage. The montage is set to a sweet and catchy song, and it is perfect for it.

Although slightly disjointed, any film that uses aerosolized weed as a weapon certainly has creativity and originality. Add in some witty banter and a realistic romance, and you have an adorable zombie rom-com! I must say that The Asylum has struck its balance, and I am becoming more pleased with each new release as it continues to develop into an undeniable direct-to-video powerhouse.
