Scary Movie 3 (2003)

While “Scary Movie 3” fails to comprehend satire, they did manage to put together a thorough understanding of spoofs. It iterates several famous films including “The Ring,” “Signs,” “The Matrix,” “8 Mile,” and “The Sixth Sense” while using a whacko speculator to retrieve scenes, but instead of making fun of these films, it blatantly uses them.

Mad magazine takes pithy movie spoofs to a different level, and its issue with “Scary Movie 3” is that it relies too heavily on quotes instead of dramatic context.

Let’s evaluate “8 Mile” first. Eminem has talent, and I did appreciate his movie, but he also has a wide-open target that “Scary Movie 3” does not hit. This Simon Rex character who plays his clone basically just copies what he does in the first movie, but with even less talent. He depicts himself throwing up into a toilet (on some poor girl), goes into contesting battles with some black rapper on stage, and then, as is customary lately, starts with the self-criticism with white bashing. He also wears a sweatshirt with a hood that is like a KKK hood. This is all how he “visualizes” parody. It’s no good. It’s all done in mockery, and none is executed against Eminem.

Much like the crop circles in the movie “Signs“, where farmer Tom Logan (played by Charlie Sheen) discovers a massive crop circle featuring an arrow pointing towards his home and the words, “Attack here.” That’s level one. Why not consider the method in which the movie made silence an element? The parting scene with his wife (played by Denise Richards) is held at a standstill being kept alive by the truck that has pinned her to a tree is simply painful to watch.

The “Ring” theme is not far off from “The Ring”; insert the cassette, lift the phone receiver, and now you wait to die. The “Sixth Sense” one is funnier as a little demon child psychically walks through the plotline of the film and predicts everyone’s hidden secrets, which is amusing yet does not escalate. Next is the Wretched scene at the abode of the newsreader whose name is Cindy Campbell (played by Anna Faris), flat with unappealing drooling priests who come over to babysit her young son.

The film is packed with more or less remembered faces. However, there are only two who actually do and work for their laughs. That would be before the opening credits where Jenny McCarthy and Pamela Anderson do what can only be described as the dumb blond routine as far as it can go, or rather, as their push-up bras do in another region.

In addition, cameos include: Queen Latifah, Eddie Griffin, William Forsythe, Peter Boyle, Macy Gray, George Carlin, Ja Rule, Master P, and Leslie Nielson, “The Olivier of spoofs,” in the role of the president. But for what purpose? The film has been under the direction of David Zucker, who together with his brother Jerry, and Jim Abrahams, invented this genre with the brilliant “Airplane!” (1980). Perhaps the difficulties rest not with him. Perhaps the issue is that the genre is over and done with and dead. It’s as though it has its crop circle, with its arrow pointing right at the center of it.
