Jason Winn alongside co-directors and writers Jonathan W. and Margaret D. Hickman’s latest film, Rave Party Massacre, depicts an unknown killer stalking drug-fueled, beautiful bodies at an illegal rave party set in a demolished hospital in the 90s.
How is everyone doing?
On the surface, it seems like a relatively solid premise for a horror movie, doesn’t it? I mean, dark and chaotic is how raves used to be! To be honest, the fact that not too many people were cut up at raves is surprising, but we will delve into this topic in another article.
Sadly, DeadThirsty does not incorporate a move-solid concept in their movie.
Rachel and her boyfriend arrive at the Rave, showcasing their obvious relationship problems. Through flashbacks, Branson the boyfriend is depicted as being tempered and deeply involved in conspiracy theories, especially after a famous speech given by President Bush about the thousand points of light.
Bush’s idea of a New World Order seems to have incited a capitalist ideology with Branson and his contemporaries thinking so deeply about it that they appear to be on the verge of instigating some form of revolt. Perhaps.
Film students know that by the end of a film, they see a complicated sequence of events that makes no sense during the main part of the movie. In retrospect, it feels like they suddenly remembered that a viewer’s understanding of the movie was needed, so they released all the pertinent information at once at the end.
The saddening news is their scheme did not go unnoticed by us while the silver lining is it still remains to be seen what the silver lining is in this scenario.
Rachel and Branson do seem to be on a pathway that would lead them to a divorce. Their shared infidelity towards other partners within Minutes of the party eliminates any hint of doubt on that. An assortment of people can be found in the psychiatric ward where a mysterious man who is disguised in black clothing along with a hyena mouth mask is distributing free drugs and goes on to kidnap them one by one.
The script lacks any innovative thinking and is bloated with an inordinate number of holes. The production values also do not seem encouraging in the slightest.
Why exactly did they choose these targets? Is there a specific motive? And why slaughter rave attendees?
The rave does, however, seem to make sense because it is scheduled to take place a day before the building gets blown up. (For the younger audience that was not able to witness the rave culture, the more extreme the location the stronger the rave!).
Winn did provide us with one stunning image in the film where Rachel finds herself the day after the rave in a morgue drawer, where everything is so dark she seems to float in a perfectly lit coffin.
I believe he might have done it better than the movie director. If you decide to try out Rave Party Massacre, make sure you check out the credits first, it will make understanding the film a whole lot easier.
