I attended the premiere subtitled screening of Promare on the 19th of September. I had other obligations that day so I wasn’t able to view the dubbed showing, however, people in my circle have had good things to say about it.
If I were to describe Promare, the anime film directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi, there is one word that perfectly fits the
This is a classic case of a Trigger output. Let me be honest, if some of the earlier Trigger titles like The Kill La Kill, Gurren Lagann, Little Witch Academia, or Darling In The Franxx and you did not like them, chances are high that you will hate this film. For those who have seen Promare, you know that the movie is so Trigger: epic, absurd-physics-defying mech wars, drool-worthy visuals, pulse-raising and blood-rushing soundtracks, expansive storylines that don’t take themselves too seriously, but most importantly, lovable characters that are as absurd as they are charming. Now, If you are like me and a fan of Trigger or in general, a fan of fresh and stunning animation, this film is undoubtedly a must-see for you. Well, let’s unravel what the story of “Promare” is all about without giving out too many spoilers.
Primary follows a narrative that takes place in the future of Japan, where a group of demonic and fiery creatures called the Burnish not only torment Japan but also the entire world. There’s not much information about the Burnish except the fact that they were once ordinary human beings who, after being mercilessly tested, transformed into enraged Burnish creatures. To resolve this global catastrophe, a new genre of firefighters is brought to light. Does this ring a bell Fire Force fans? The main lead, Galo Thymos, is one of them. An overly optimistic person, who is constantly battling for the control of the Burnish and later, the world itself. But things get out of hand, and motives and biases are put into question when Galo, together with his squad, meets the last remaining free Burnish, the Mad Burnish, and their haughty leader, Lio Fotia.
Like most Trigger productions, the plot can swing wildly into absurdity and its unrealistic nature can border on unbelievable. But, the film’s excessive and often funny self-awareness straddles the line perfectly. There was one scene in the film that took an outrageous plot device and used it for shock value, and the theater exploded in laughter. Primary is not apologetic about how illogical it is. It saves viewers from constant disbelief and simply urges us to enjoy the ride. I find it hard to take offense with Promare’s story other than its thematic incoherence. At some point, it deals with discrimination and injustice, but then it shifts to the abuse of power by the state; the moral of the story is whether the ends justify the means, or do not give up in the pursuit of doing right. While appreciating the diverse themes, their failure to capture these ideas intricately or profoundly is a wasted opportunity. Furthermore, fulfilling certain expectations in the film brings a sense of satisfaction, even if the story beats and Twists are painfully predictable.
In the beginning, I will not try to hide anything, just minimize the problem. Later on, perhaps, I will try to construct something slaughtered march, however.
In the story, the characters experience something that is why they each need their scapegoat, without a voice they cannot understand each other. But everyone agrees without a single soul communicating verbally they will be in no mood for anything together. There is their relationship that helps them explore the twin sides of human behavior, of heart, a heart of detachment, where every person is an entity and citizen of a large society that is marked by non-individuality. In conclusion, we draw our aim from, without its boundaries tether, everything remains unperformed.
Visuals-wise, Promare is something to behold. The art itself is filled with colors, primarily the characters and some of the environments being surrounded by bolded black outlines. This makes the feelings and the features of the characters incredibly breathtaking to view. It looks like Japan is using CG in this film because it integrates 2D, 3D, and CG art alongside animation exceptionally well. The action in Promare is smooth, effortless, and filled with meaning depending on its multiple themes. Although there are some moments where some 2D figures or objects do not blend well with the 3D backgrounds, the world of Promare is pleasing to the eye. The film often uses panning shots that sometimes rotate, which may be disorienting at times, but for the most part, the direction is consistent.
Hiroyuki Sawano composed the music for this film and it is just as stunning as the image. If you know anything about Sawano, then you will know that he is considered one of the top anime composers along with Yoko Kanno. Classic Sawano’s strikingly bombastic music is beautiful, satisfying, and intriguingly fresh due to its techno-flavored orchestral balance. It seemed through the course of the film that Sawano’s music had the role of a character to play, interlacing, ebbing, and soaring with the movement of the cast and the action. The visuals along with the music are worth watching, even in the absence of the emotional intensity of the characters.
Promare reminds me of why I love anime. It is fun, full of action, beautiful, and makes no apologies for being an anime. This is easily one of the best anime movies I have seen in the past year, which is saying a lot considering how it includes a theater experience I surely will not be forgetting anytime soon. If a school semester has drained you, and you want to escape reality for a few hours, then you can not find better entertainment than Promare.
