One Remains is a film directed by Josh Hodgins. It features an ensemble cast starring Vanessa Leigh, Ryan O’Quinn and Christopher Atkins. Unfortunately, the movie lacks structure, failing to execute much needed improvement in the overarching themes.
The movie sets out with a simple premise that includes a group of young filmmakers who travel to a secluded cabin to interview an elderly man. Prior to becoming afflicted with dementia, he used to work as a park ranger and had an unfortunate incident.
The whole group learns this while he lucidly recounts the tales of the mutilated bodies he came across at a campsite. Against his son’s wishes, he tells the filmmakers he actually documented his findings on a tape.
While gradually showing the group what he boasts to show them, he starts forgetting where he is and begins to exhibit a fair amount of paranoia. He is then taken away. The group decides to continue watching the tape, only now to see themselves die in myriad ways. They, of course, panic with the majority of them in denial about what they witnessed.
There is a major shift, altering the mindset of everyone. That is when they inexplicably figure out the shocking truth; their guides know more than they let on.
Considering how slow the first hour is, the last minute stinger scene feels very rushed. Then, the movie has to offer everything at once, which isn’t enjoyable at all. Also, the cherry on top is that set expectations are never met. The sharp continual cut from action to inaction feels out of touch as well.
This film can’t be categorized as poor simply for the incoherency of the editing. One Remains has reasonable depth and the second act worth watching. There are extreme moments or graphic scenes, but not without somber mystery. What’s even better, the depiction keeps on revealing rumbling hints stimulating the viewers mind for further problem solving.
One Remains suffers the same fate as slasher films. It has an interesting concept where editing choices did not make any further close to reality as well mindless action was never met with the sharp cinematic logic. The blundering attempts of the script writers to provide a smart rich plot only resulted in a poorly standard shocker devoid of the one main generator and primary fate idea – a clear view.
The most notable thing about the first hour is a very long and stimulating scene with two women engaging with one another. If that is your preference for horror, I suppose it is acceptable, but let’s face it, it is pretty boring.
It is a poor movie after all due to the poorly told story, what feels like a rushed final act, and the bad editing.
