Legend of the Muse is a must-watch horror fantasy film written and directed by John Burr with brilliant performances from Riley Egan, Elle Evans, Kate Mansi, and Max Decker. The film is crafted brilliantly to combine art, mindless violence, and extreme sexual desires. The film is a masterpiece full of suspense, from the intense, action-filled beginning to the fulfilling end.
In contrast with the artists I grew up admiring, Adam is the polar opposite. The more rigid and monotonous side of the accountant’s personality is in fact relatable to him. There is absolutely zero inspiration or any kind of passion in him. He is lethargic and unsociable. Most people would consider him not a great fit for a lead in a film depicting an artist, but bizarrely, that is why he works perfectly in Legend of the Muse. Unfortunately, actor Riley Egan never seems to come out of his shell, so his character is rather stagnant in development. At the end of the day, he does get good sex and paints awfully well, it’s just that he blacks out whilst doing it and maintains that accountant persona the whole time.
Eliah Evans, also known as the Leannán Sí has one purpose and that is to captivate, and she truly does. From her very first appearance in the movie, it’s impossible to take my gaze off her. Personally, her jumping in and out of the water and coiling her body with a towel around her waist grabbed my attention. She is not a normal human being, she is something beyond that. It’s hard to explain but she is in charge of her seduction so much that calling her a temptress would need more strong words to accompany her charm. Sounds like I’m praising her doesn’t it, yet I have been infatuated with this silent monotype for a long time and after watching Eliah Evans, she has completely blown my mind.
As he intends for Adam’s soul to flicker with the subdued flames, Leanan si selects him because of his milquetoast personality that has the potential of bringing out the artist in him through sheer savage ecstasy, which is the beauty of folklore and other tales passed down for years and years. And oh boy does she rip the most out of him.
The plot has been intricately woven and is supplemented with subplots and side characters who are not your run of the mill archetypes. Everything flows and makes sense without any one particular part being overwhelming, instead adding depth to the story. I especially loved the art, which was gorgeous. I would genuinely enjoy putting some of those pieces on my walls.
There wasn’t anything to critique, as everything from sound mixing to visual effects was satisfactory. The score, cast, set design, and artwork everything was perfect. This was a creature horror film, which is my favorite subgenre, but this one had a monster that most people wouldn’t mind being devoured by.
I’ll also have to give a shoutout to Kate Mansi and Max Decker, who played Maria and Hector marvelously. Decker was awesome as the dreaded tough guy and Maria definitely did not shy away as the edgy romantic interest. or rather as the danger.
Legend of the Muse does not play it too safe and in some aspects, outdoes itself. This is unusual and rather a bold attempt at art because it takes a different spin on a horror-style monster movie by adding sexy elements on top of it. The term succubus may be of ancient origin and was really popular in the past 40-50 years, but for some reason, this interpretation made more sense to me. I appreciate your thoughts and until next time, stay sordid.
