Johnny cheats on his girlfriend Tori, who is as innocent as a preschooler with a Donna D’Ericco lookalike named Elaine from a wet T-shirt contest, and she even steals his and Tori’s overdue rent money to boot. Johnny and his two lazy ski buddies have trouble with their boss, who is a nasty woman after overhearing him make disparaging remarks about her questioning her femininity. Things become more difficult for Johnny when Elaine appears looking for work at the ski lodge where he and Tori are employed. Johnny’s life is about to turn into a story on Jerry Springer when an unfurling avalanche due to a crash plane gets everyone trapped in a snowed-in lodge. By everyone, I mean everyone I’ve just mentioned. Well, it’s a low-budget film, so they couldn’t afford a bigger cast.

The scientist and the Ice Queen now find themselves trapped along with other passengers of the lodge under the snow. They once both onboarded a plane when the pilot was murdered mid-flight by a thawed out corpse of a female humanoid ice age discovered by a sick mad scientist who wanted to freeze preserve her, unwarrantedly bring her back to life for research purposes, and then study her. The plane came crashing down into a mountain from the pilot getting killed, causing the breakdown of the plane leading to a massive avalanche.

It is at this point where everything begins to unravel, especially for the characters and the film. Once again, we have a movie that is centered around a cast of mostly uninspiring and cliched characters that are randomly placed into a horror movie where they aimlessly walk around a closed environment hoping not to get killed (or, in the best-case scenario, manage to outrun the killer). Ice Queen does feature a cool (no pun intended) monster and a good idea for a movie, and while I did enjoy the film overall, I could not help but think that it would have been, and should have been, much better had a little bit more creativity been put into the plot and the Ice Queen’s motives.

Unlike today’s scream queens, some may not even have the slightest hint of Ami Veevers-Chorlton’s zeal, who plays the role of Ice Queen with immense pride. She has a remarkable talent in monster growling which, paired with her marvelous body language, portrays the monster perfectly. Most of today’s monster moviemakers do not seem to appreciate the idea of a created monster possessing the ability to be a character by themselves, instead choosing to treat the monster like some simple gadget. Rather than focusing her efforts on the other characters, Chorlton transforms the monster, making her far more captivating than any of the other supporting cast. Her growling too often without any particular order or reasoning is the problem. When out of the ordinary things happen in the world of monsters, like her developing a crush on Johnny and plotting to seduce him, the outcome is extremely comical, and for all the right reasons but not too deliberately and overly attempted at humor.

As you can tell, just judging from the box art, the Ice Queen is not your conventional female from the Ice Age. She needs sub-zero temperatures to function, and with a simple stab of her hand, she has the ability to freeze someone from the inside out. What the practical essence of that power is, other than making the death sequences interesting is lost on me, but I did find it quite entertaining that while watching the movie, one can easily notice when the budget starts to dip. The first couple of victims appear to be completely frozen corpses, but as the movie progresses, the last few victims merely freeze their bodies, and upon death, release a preposterous putrid puff of cold air.

The film overlooks some annoying discrepancies regarding the Ice Queen’s character. For example, she is so warm-sensitive that the automatic hand dryer in a restroom renders her unconscious, yet later on a person pours scalding hot water that only stuns her. When you see how she dies at the end of the film, this fact becomes incredibly questionable. Okay, I am overthinking some things here but I enjoyed the idea of this ‘monstrous’ character so much, I had to pay attention to all the rules the movie began bending.

Ice Queen finally raised my hopes for a convincing direct-to-video monster movie, and although it entertained me far more than other movies in its category, it sadly still fell short. If this movie had just a bit more funding and a better script, it could have been extraordinary. In any case, Ice Queen is the type of monster film that works excellently as a rental. There was an impressive monster portrayal, blood, some nudity, plenty of hilarious scenes, and the greatest use of the word “bitch” where is not featured in a gangsta rap album. The last twenty minutes which consist of the Ice Queen’s seductive scenes were also enjoyable.
