Horror films focused on the behind the scenes of horror films are a common phenomenon. Films that are inspired and based on urban myths are now a dime a dozen. Combining both is Hinsdale House. It also exceeds expectation by adding “filmed in an actual haunted house” for the cherry on top. Is it just marketing fluff, or does it actually give what it promises?
Hinsdale House is an actual site located in Hinsdale, New York with a backstory that goes back to the 1970’s. The movie places a crew of a horror film into the location and lets them confront the horrific events inside. Pauly (writer/director Steve Stanulis) and his tech (co-writer Derek Ross Mackay) installed cameras all over the house and property. That includes, as we soon find out, the actresses’ bedrooms.
Strange events begin to unfold. Pauly and his leading lady/girlfriend Liz (Marisa Bertani) retreat to their room, only for her to start acting possessed. Kelly (Victoria Oliver) begins to prepare for bed but then gets distracted by the sight of a strange camera. After she exits the room power goes out and strange sounds start echoing throughout the entire house. Then people start to vanish.
The survivors learn soon enough that they need to figure out the mystery or at least a way to escape before it is too late. Their attempt to leave leads them to the same place, or worse, worse scenarios.
Hinsdale House is not a found footage film. While we do see some of the events through the cameras, there is plenty of regular footage as well. The issue is, the footage has not been edited well in the first place. Most of the time, people simply disappear. The camera cuts away to whoever they are speaking to, and when the camera pans back, the person in question is no longer there.
Despite the fact that some of it features a glowing orb, which drifts about aimlessly, there isn’t much else that catches the interest of the audience. The Hinsdale House is 65 minutes of people just loitering around in the dark and saying they are affrighted- and doing such a bad job at it that it is aggravating to watch. The last half hour shows the final girl in her pathetic act of faking tears and wailing so deeply that if I did not need to write a review, I would have turned it off immediately. It was doubly infuriating because she performed quite well in her more regular scenes.
Previously, Stanulis and Mackay worked together on a film named Clinton Road. Much like that movie, Hinsdale House is inspired by a folklore from Western New York. Unlike Clinton Road, however, this movie has no budget and zero profits. I’m not saying either film is fantastic, but at least Clinton Road was ludicrous enough to be fun to watch. This one however, plods along with no explanation and an empty ending which left me baffled.
