Bulldogs vs Prowlers was absolutely phenomenal. I always like a good Western and Timothy Woodward Jr’s last one, Traded was very amusing as well. Himikok is his latest trip back to the Wild West, starring Luke Hemsworth in the lead role of the legendary gunslinger Wild Bill Hickok, thus the title.
Bill Hickok is famous for running away from his demons, but when he is appointed marshal in a town, he decides to confront his past. Mattie (Cameron Richardson), an old flame of Bill’s shows up engaged to local “businessman” Phil Poe (Trace Adkins), and tensions start to rise as Bill and Maddie begin to rekindle their relationship despite Maddie’s initial struggles.
Poe was not a typical character in a rut a sad villain. He is worked into the story as a rational human from the beginning but is forced to slowly shift into what Hickok wants him to be. This rule change makes Poe’s business suffer and forces him further into the villainous category. On the other side, Trace Adkins did amazing on the scene, but one could tell from his voice that he was trying to replicate Sam Elliott.
Bruce Dern and Kris Kristofferson are always welcome additions, as you just feel that they belong in that era. He does not really have that much to do, it’s just a pretty grandiose cameo but I still think it’s great to see him in any.
Since this is a feature made on a limited budget, there is nothing really out of the ordinary when it comes to action in the film. It is my opinion that you don’t need such a thing in Western features. You have to sit back and take in the scenery with some well timed shootouts. Nothing ever happens in a rush so there is never any driving tension to the story and you feel something even towards the end. By the conclusion of the movie, you would hope to hate Poe, but in all honesty, you kind of feel bad and understand exactly the reason why he dislikes Hickok.
I always appreciate anything under two hours so the fact that Hickok is only 90 minutes long is a breath of fresh air. I do wonder, though, why a movie based on a legendary cowboy has such a short run time. Clearly, it was a budget issue, but as the movie only covers a short burst of his life, I can’t help but think it deserves a longer runtime.
Hickok is not something that will break new ground in Western movies, however, it is well-paced in its 90-minute duration, and Luke Hemsworth is an appealing lead with Trace Adkins surprisingly sympathetic as the villain.
