Gallowswalkers tries to merge western and horror genres such as vampires and cowboys, but there are only a few successes throughout the development of cinema. From my angle, they experienced a few good aspects and have far more things that didn’t work out in their favor.
The movie started production long before the film’s lead actor Wesley Snipes found complications with his taxes. Production was completed after Snipes worked his way out of the issues. Snipes plays a gunslinger named Aman, a man whose love was raped and murdered by antagonists who he later kills. The so-called bad guys appear to be resurrected as the undead who for some reason have a fancy for slaughtering people to obtain their skin. The script not only lacks coherence, it is utterly sloppy. In this uninteresting story, Aman rescues an outlaw along the way who helps him exact his revenge. As far as the plot goes, that is all that matters.
Gallowwalkers has a few strong points. For a direct-to-DVD film, it has incredible production value. With a budget under $20M, what director Andrew Goth was able to accomplish on screen is amazing. He does a great job in recreating an old school Western vibe through imaginative visuals and camera angles. He also has a strong sense of cinema. In addition, Snipes still has the charisma of an action star, and he looks fantastic in the attire of the old West gunslinger hooded in red and black. Apart from the above, there isn’t really much else to hang onto. The rest of the cast range from mediocre to terrible, and most missed the mark. The dubbing or later recording of a lot of the dialogue feels very cheap and reminds me of a 70s Italian giallo; it’s as if the actors were foreigners that couldn’t speak English, but to my surprise, it turned out to be a US/UK film. There is quite a bit of gore, such as Aman tearing off his victims’ heads and spines Joe Mauer style, of course as well as the countless gunshots that come with the territory of a Western. The problem is, like many modern horror films, it is accompanied with excessive CGI blood, ruining the violence.
These reasons may be minor, but the glaring issue with the film is that it is boring. The film lacks many exciting or interesting moments. Even with a runtime of only 90 minutes, sitting through the film is tedious.
More Westerns infused with horror would be ideal, as they go hand in hand. But, unfortunately, Gallowwalkers fails to deliver. It’s not horrendous and if you are a true devotee of Wesley Snipes or Western films, then you might enjoy some parts.
