Teenager Jenny Bilson’s parents announce they are going away for a few days and leave her home alone. Her boyfriend Mike immediately persuades her to ditch school and hold a party inviting four other friends over. When the parents return their daughter has psychological wounds reminiscent of war. With Vick’s tragic and tragic grief from relentless hose systems, he has wasted myriad youths. In his mindset, everyone is responsible. All children henceforth come to imprint the monster’s children. Vick finds Jenny and her family responsible for the agony suffered by Vick’s family. This introspection leads him to pick up a knife and even when against his unsophisticated logic, slaughter his way through the seemingly innumerable drunk teenagers set to get slaughtered.
Ditch Day Massacre is a mockumentary directed by Joe Hendrick in his directorial debut after a long extravagant period being an emcee on various productions. This is produced on a modicum budget. The filming location suggests close proximity to the kitchen pantry of the director’s inexplicable house confined in California’s regrettable context.
The film is filled with unknown cast members aside from a few. One of the exceptions is Bill Oberst Jr., who has become known for playing more villainous characters throughout the 2010s. He looks like weather-beaten leather and melts into psycho roles like they are second nature to him, which is why he has the time of his life in this film. The other genre regular is Lynn Lowry who played the leading role in George Romero’s The Crazies (1973) and David Cronenberg’s Shivers (1975). She experienced an unexpected career renaissance in her sixties during the 2010s. In this film, she plays the seductive neighbor to Bill Oberst Jr. Most of the other unknown actors leave something to be desired, although some of them are passable. If Joe Hendrick tries to make them speak in a naturalistic way which awkwardly forces them into his narrative style it becomes painful to watch.
The initial awkwardness of the establishing scenes gets forgotten as the slaughter begins. Joe Hendrick keeps things moving along with a reasonable energy. The blood flows, and there is moderate suspense and some snappy sarcasm. The only drawback is the cheap and unconvincing gory special effects particularly the earlier scene where a pair of fingers are cut off.
The other drawback is a stupid title. The IMDB claims that the Ditch pre-named title does nothing to imply it is a horror movie which automatically makes you think of a ditch beside a road. However, it is known more widely as Ditch Day Massacre. As the movie progresses, we reluctantly learn that all the title embodies is a day when a set of teens decide to ‘ditch’ school. Somehow there is an effort to place Ditch Day Massacre alongside classic holiday themed movies like Halloween.
