Doctor Carver was directed by Louisa Warren and co-written by Shannon Holiday. It tells the gruesome and violent story of a possessed plastic surgeon. Warren is famously known for her film Conjuring the Plastic Surgeon.
Four women, Tonya, Dina, Belle, and Peppa, all have a form of self-esteem issue and want to get surgery for different reasons. Their issues stem from a lack of acceptance, confidence, trust, and even abuse. Each of these character’s motives is believable within the fabric of reality.
As a society, we tend to attack every character flaw that women portray. It is neat to observe how devastating behavior such as self-confidence destruction can undermine a person’s mental health and overall well-being. It is an unfortunate albeit fascinating topic that serves to be extremely delicate and add depth to the narrative of the story.
The main issue might be that the women receive complimentary plastic surgeries from the enigmatic Nurse Alexa, portrayed by Danielle Scott, and they eagerly accept. Even incorporating elements of a doubtful nature. That’s a difficult pill to accept, especially when the characters are invited to participate in a body modification séance. Whether it is extreme or not, this is stretching the suspension of disbelief too far, and each character becomes so frustratingly moronic that they become harder to care about.
They sit in a secluded house and await their name to see the doctor, which on some days takes up to a week, and guess what? The doctor in question is a stripped demonic entity, played by Zuza Tehanu, who specializes in the ‘be careful what you wish for’ routine and is waiting for his next unfortunate sucker. While Alexa takes pleasure in the sanguinary butchery.
Which undoubtedly applies to Doctor Carver. In that regard, blood and gore-focused films still require creativity. But more often than not, it’s done in a beautifully horrid manner. The special effects are decent, for the most part, the mask on the demonic surgeon is pretty poor, and although it is a low-budget film, great care was taken to ensure that this detail was prominent, and it is.
There are more positives than negatives with Doctor Carver, and while the character’s actions do get a bit shady as the movie progresses, the cast does a lot to make it believable. The films of Louisa Warren can be a hit or a miss and it is not shocking that Jagged Edge Productions had a hand in this one (Scott Jeffery is credited as a producer), but all in all, this is a decent effort. Great characters, an earnest attempt to put in a deeper story, okay acting, and enough of the gore. It is worth at least one viewing.
