Art of Darkness is a horror film about a group of twenty-year-olds who attempt to go camping but end up getting murdered by a serial killer with a cheap mask. Directed by Steve Laurence and produced on a budget of $30 thousand dollars, this film fails in multiple places yet surpasses many of its competitors. This film’s highlight is the story, along with an actress who can actually act. What sets this movie apart is the fact that the cellphones actually work and there is only one mask, which takes away from the typical horror cliches.

Warning Alert For full immersion into the Art of Darkness set aside the scepticism. Ben Richards (Martin Laurence) is in a pub meeting Nick (Rob Maloney) his friend who does drugs and later is accompanied by his wife, Liz (Emily Baxter) an aspiring model who is photographed by a psychopathic artist and is paid a lot of money. While posing for the photoshoot, Liz is assaulted with a nail gun. Atrocious-looking paintings are shown to Liz, one of which was painted with blood and a human eyeball. With disbelief, I report that Liz survived the photo shoot.

While Ben gets a phone call from Liz, who is crying for help, they are interrupted by a poor connection and all Ben hears is the street name.

(So, what, we are concerned it’s a long difficult road that gets to the house and it stands out prominently as it’s illuminated like a festive light display? Do we even care that Ben observes from a distance that Liz’s vehicle is leaving a drive that also appears to be under the custody of some other person, and this massive indication fails to register with him? Didn’t think so!) Ben reports it to the police and eventually, they show up in the form of D.I. Mitchells (Lenn Blasse). But he’s also called his mate Nick (who turns out to be related to Philip!), and together they qualify for the Academy Award for “Most Suspicious Characters in a Feature Film.”

When Ben attempts to seek Liz, who is in dire danger, he too falls into the cunning clutches of the relentless Mitchells, (who have a unit for crime scene teleporting). In Ben’s case, stealing a car from a thief and accidentally murdering him is what had Ben proclaiming that he was being hunted. Even though it has been made clear, a trunk and some DNA evidence have a body stowed into it plus fingers twirling at odds revealing Ben is innocent. Perhaps it was safe to assume the cops wouldn’t trust him. Most probably Ben never looked innocent to them. Go figure.

Philip has his eyes on the curvaceous Liz (and so did I), and he demonstrates to the frightened woman his intentions by slaughtering another woman (he must have some extra terrified lady prisoners to abduct). Hot chicks are murdered by him, and their blood is used as red paint.

Enough of my nonsense. The plot, as I noted before, and some of the acting were not too bad, but Martin Laurence was a bit too wooden and completely lacking in charm, and it reminded me of a certain actress from the Twilight Movies. Or rather, someone has surely entered a comma between words in the script by mistake. For what Art of Darkness is, and the fact that it was done on the low, all these things are forgivable and it was actually not bad to sit through. Would I sit down and watch it after this? Are you freaking kidding me?
