In the world of “Over Her Dead Body,” one tends to wonder why the lack of shock and even fascination towards ghosts exists. Why isn’t that ghost everyone’s main focus of attention? Supernatural spectacles from beyond the veil are treated like mere tropes. The film includes a Catholic priest who seems to completely disregard his own church’s stance on ghosts (that they are a figment of the human imagination) and takes the opportunity to provide therapy instead.

The background: On the wedding day of Henry and Kate (played by Paul Rudd and Eva Longoria Parker), a reality TV show is filmed. She is a Type A perfectionist who furiously runs about the place set for the reception, fixing table settings, changing the decorations, and losing her cool on the ice sculptress (Stephen Root) who made an angel out of ice… only to deliver it without AU wings! She tells him to get it back and swap it for the one with wings because, as we all know, all angels have one. He is logical in stating that he cannot just put a body of wings onto an ice sculpture. Then, Kate sadly dies in an ice sculpture accident. A decent amount of time later, Henry is still mourning and gets told by his sister Chloe (Lindsay Sloane) that it is time for his life to begin again. He should start dating. It’s out of the question to him. He is still in love with Kate and refuses to have it. She convinces him to go see a psychic she knows named Ashley (Lake Bell). He agrees. Is she a real psychic? Sometimes. She starts to get vibes. So does he. They do not need to be psychics to understand they are falling in love.

I guess it is fine for psychics (as opposed to psychiatrists) to date their patients, but Ashley is the one looking for advice. She receives it from Dan (Jason Biggs) who is her partner in a catering business. Also from Father Marks (William Morgan Sheppard), who too has no idea that his church does not believe in psychics. (Was he ordained by mail order? The church believes that consulting a psychic is a sin, but does not completely discount the idea of receiving information from the other side although that may indeed be disinformation from Satan). Regardless… eek! The ghost of Kate shows up, not too happy with another woman trying to swoop in on her man. She plans on ruining their love affair.

“Kate”, a character within the above movie, is able to walk through walls but doesn’t seem to have any material presence. It makes me question the fact that why does she never fall through floors? And more importantly, do the elevators move without them? I can keep ignoring the possibility of some of the questions being too intricate and exceeding a reasonable level of imagination. These types of questions always stay unanswered and that is why I really appreciate the marvelous way ghost was integrated into the formula plot. If I was in the presence of a ghost, I would put my worries aside and make queries pertaining to what happens to us after we die. I guess I am not the only one thinking about this.

The above movie captures the common representation of heaven with an angel (Kali Rocha) that has no wings…as Everything is drowning in blindingly white light and people wearing white robes. Which to be honest is quite expected, spiritual beings have no use for flying. Also, Kate’s traditional wardrobe is completely flipped. She now wears the part where she comes to stay down here.

Even while watching a movie where a ghost is present, the biggest twist is the one Dan reveals to Ashley. Though they have known each other for five years, she is shocked. I will refrain from revealing what the twist is, but add my thoughts that Dan could not have lasted five years in the catering business without the secret being known to everybody.

Take a moment to think how differently this movie would play out if it was taken seriously. Would it be better or worse than how it plays out as a comedy? I think so. Do you find “her ghost appears and tries to sabotage the new relationship” to be a novel idea? Me neither. It’s the sort of concept that seems only plausible during a pitch meeting. We are not alone here, done that, but we absolutely did not want to go there and attempt that in the first place.
