Though Jack Frost’s body was destroyed in the accident, the man’s murderous spirit returns in the form of a snowman. Frost now wishes to kill the guy who sent him for an execution.
Where do we even begin with a movie like Jack Frost? The unintentional comedy stems from the horrendous script, abominable acting, and the montage of a tipsy father attempting to capture his family Christmas which barely passes as cinematography. It’s baffling how a following to this movie even exists. The VHS cover would be the only probable reason for this film ever coming close to success. The holographic image of a murderous snowman would sit proudly on the shelf of Blockbuster and joyfully deceive young horror movie fans into thinking they were getting a decent cinematic experience. If you had the chance to rent Jack Frost or found it somehow airing on late night Channel 5, you would remember it as the movie with a snowman that attempts to violently rape a woman with a carrot. This horrifying, cheap display of shocking storytelling is something that even tilted critics and a movie that will forever be remembered by many for the last twenty plus years, but you would be better off forgetting it.
The storyline can be summed up in a few sentences; The infamous serial killer Jack Frost, has finally been apprehended after a killing spree of 38 people. He is being relocated to a prison facility where he would await his execution and while in transit, the van collides with a genetic research truck.
Jack Frost is presumed dead after being drenched in ice, but little do the prison guards know, he has already transformed into ice. To avenge the cop who tried to catch him, he makes his way to Snowmonton. From there it’s a mix of dreadful ice-gimmick puns and poorly executed kills. Everyone, including a young Shannon Elizabeth, seems utterly ashamed to be part of this film. However, there is one person who looks like he understood the assignment and it is Scott MacDonald, the man who plays Jack Frost. Just like Chucky, MacDonald often leaves a menacing charisma everywhere he goes.
Unfortunately, the entire performance is completely marred due to the absence of lines. Christopher Allport is the one who portrays Sam Tiler, the policeman who injures frost. Most of the time, Allport looks like he is sleepwalking each one of his scenes. It is so unfortunate to think that this incredibly huge talent is being wasted. MacDonald, Allport, Elizabeth, and most of the cast have had the opportunity to showcase incredible talents in other films, and the blame might just fall on Michael Cooney, the director.
Cooney has only directed two movies, namely ‘Jack Frost‘ and ‘Jack Frost 2: Revenge of the Mutant Killer Snowman‘ and hopefully his directing endeavors will finish there.
A real pity, however, is how adequately awful ‘Jack Frost’ is, as there are plenty of concepts to the original idea that seem interesting. Given a higher budget and a better creative team, I would love to see a good quality murderous snowman movie, complete with suspense and thrills. The plot may seem nonsensical but there’s true terror in a killer that can shift their body into a state of liquid to solid. I can picture a scene where someone drinks Jack Frost and then Jack Frost kills them from the inside out. That’s something I was able to think of within five seconds and it is already better than this 89-minute movie.
To sum it up, it is definitely safe to indicate that I detest this movie. While I try to find some fun in certain scenes, especially the gory kill set pieces, it’s distractingly dreadful to look at. The movie’s tone is cruel and that feeling translates into every scene.
Instances like the police aiming at Jack Frost with hair driers are entertaining and undeniably a tribute the early zany horror comedies of Peter Jackson, only that they autofocus on the care and attention that Jackson puts into his movies. Consider Michael Cooney wanting to do ‘Lord of the Rings‘ or ‘The Lovely Bones‘? Keep those carrots far from Tucci.
