Psychos is a revenge movie that almost gets its act together, but at the end of the day, it does not give viewers any redeeming quality to cling to. Lately, I’ve become obsessively interested in the first few minutes of movies. I have gone on to become almost obsessed with mentally outlining films with respect to their opening scenes. So, I tend to pay very close attention to opening scenes these days.
This one begins quite alright: two ordinary policemen walk up to a house that belongs to a middle-income family and notice what seems like blood on the sidewalk. The front door being open, they shout their presence and walk into the eerily quiet home that awaits them (the house is lit). There are some strange items scattered in the air, including something weird buried in a flower pot. At this moment, one of the officers swears under his breath and makes the sign of the cross. For some reason, I figured, ‘If that guy’s Catholic, then I’m the Pharaoh’s nephew!’ They calmly ascend to the upper floors, hoping to locate the presumed dead gentleman slumped on the bed, and to their astonishment, he is still alive.
An officer calls in, imploring medical assistance familiar if not routine. I’m not sure I am entirely at ease with how calm he seems. Keep in mind, he does not even bother to say something like, Sir, what happened here? The strangeness of the situation is only made funnier by his mannerisms. Now, let’s meet the three primary protagonists, each hiding their particular dark ‘skeletons’ so to speak. Good character-driven horror is a hard thing to come by (I assure you I have earned the right to say that!), and as already mentioned, here they do make an effort. All major characters get a considerable portion of screen time, and the dialogue isn’t awful (most of the time).
Look at the world we live in, where acing a YouTube channel together with more than a trailer critique is a task and so people are doing it for attention. One of the characters in the movie is a teacher who is doing a fantastic job of failing in his profession and to just add to the chaos J.J. is in medical school. Finally rounding up is Sasha, an addicted stripper. While all three of them have their psychological issues, to be frank, I couldn’t find a reason to like any of them.
Now let me give the movie credit where it deserves one, into dark and chilling themes, which it does. In addition to that, the midsection does an adequate job of providing a peek of what is concealed. Oh yes, stress does now account for the negative scoring. It is somewhat disjointed and lacking in concentration. It is produced, directed, co-invested, and edited by Sandy Chukhadarian who notes that the storyline of these dashing women who escaped captivity in a house for a decade in Cleveland, Ohio was the primary motivation. From what I gathered online about her, it seems like she never got much opportunity to shine except for her glory days as an editor.
A number of vanilla interviews here and there did not fully attempt to address her career. Besides, all of us have to start somewhere, haven’t we? But let’s put it this way, if she wants to further her career, then she has to make some improvements! The main burning issue here is that our heroines have decided to embark upon the most amusing venture of settling scores and getting back at the person who did them so wrong, and then snatching away the DVD.
As you might expect, the details of the action plan will be firmly grounded in prolonged car argumentation. Nevertheless, the problem here is that they seem to be breaking in just about the hour when Mr. Super Creepy is somewhere in the mid-60s and has memories of the golden days when he used to torture little kiddos. This is a very strong opening and indeed makes for a powerful narrative. The execution, however, fails miserably. Anyone who watches horror regularly will probably not rank this among the worst three movies they have seen this year but mark my words, it will not be good either!
